Surface modification with thin polymer coatings offered

A German research institute develops thin polymer coatings to provide surfaces with a variety of functionalities for multiple applications. Antibacterial or drug releasing activity can be addressed as well as friction reduction or water repellency. Application fields are medical devices in long-term or short-term body contact (e.g. vascular implants, wound dressings or other surfaces). The institute is looking for technical cooperation agreements or research cooperations.

The German institute focuses on application-oriented research at the interface between life sciences and material sciences. It has profound experience in biomaterial aspects. One of the R&D fields is the preparation of thin polymer coatings for a variety of functionalities and applications.

The potential applications of textiles for example, are increasing and suitable coatings are in great demand. In this context, the institute explores a variety of functionalities (antibacterial effects, water repellency, drug releasing effects, friction reducing effects, biodegradability, compostability) and offers them as compatible modules. In this field industrial partners are sought for new product developments within technical cooperation agreements.
A medical device, such as a cardio vascular stent, catheter or endoscope is another application example. Cyto and blood compatibility during long-term or short-term contact can both be achieved by developing application specific coatings. The coatings are prepared from natural or synthetic polymers. They can be used as drug carriers for local drug release, for surface modification for reduced tissue reaction or as friction reducing coatings.

Typical characteristics of the coatings:
- All procedures can be performed from aqueous solutions.
- The inclusion of active biocompatible substances is possible.
- No additional chemical treatment in harsh conditions is needed.
- No special coating facilities are required.
- The coatings are homogeneous with a thickness of less than 1 micro meter and precision of few nanometer
- A variety of applicable polymers allows fine tuning of the resulting surface properties
- Depending on the used polymers the coatings have a very high mechanical stability (e.g. for reduced friction) or they can degrade within well-defined time limits and be used as drug carriers.
- Complex structures and inner surfaces can be coated.
- All coatings can be sterilized.

The laboratory is well equipped with all necessary techniques and devices, allowing control of the build-up process, stability measurement of the coatings under mechanical stress, performance of release kinetics of immobilized drugs as well as biological testing.
The laboratory offers validation of the production process to provide quality control and also offers support during the transfer of the process to the industrial partner.

Besides, a joint research cooperation can be discussed, to further develop the polymer coatings regarding the applications and functionalities. The institue has large experience in joint research programms, also with trans-national character.

Minimum Technical Specification or Expertise Needed:
The institute seeks products to be coated. Within a technical cooperation agreement, a product and application-specific coating will be developed and tested. In a joint research cooperation the existing coating can further be developed, exploiting new application fields.

Advantages & innovations:

Compared to existing coatings, which are often thick and inflexible, the here applied coatings are very thin (less than 1 micro meter), homogeneous and withstand mechanical stress.
The coatings allow surface modification and give the possibility of including active substances. As the coatings are produced at room temperature and in aqueous solution, the procedure is very favorable even for sensitive molecules, such as nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, etc.
In contrast to other coating methods, it is possible to coat the interior of e.g. tubes.
The production process can be automated, an important fact for the implementation of the coatings for different users.
